Italian propaganda card by French-born graphic artist, painter and sculptor, Achille Lucien Mauzan (1883-1952), selling a war bond. Mauzan mainly worked in Italy and South America. It shows an Italian soldier wielding his axe against the overwhelmingly strong (Austro-Hungarian) hand grasping at the Piave river. After the Battle of Caporetto in October 1917, the Italians had to withdraw 150km behind the Piave, where they were reinforced by French and British troops.

In Italy, Cadorna had by this time been replaced by General Armando Diaz. After the Italian Army, assisted by French and British troops, was able to repel a major attack by Austria-Hungary against its positions behind the Piave, Diaz went on the counterattack at the end of October 1918. They broke the Austro-Hungarian lines at Vittoro Veneto and the already demoralised Imperial and Royal Army suffered a crushing defeat from which it would not recover. On 4 November, an armistice was signed and Italy received the territories it desired. But the price had been high: around 700,000 Italians had died and roughly one million had been severely wounded.
